You Can Help a Friend

As a friend, you might be the first to realize when your friend is showing signs of depression. You might even recognize it before your friend does. The first step is to talk with your friend and simply ask her how she is feeling. Ask her what might be causing her depression and how long she has been feeling down, and mention any of the signs that you might have been noticing. Remind your friend that depression is highly treatable under a doctor’s supervision and, that it is not her fault. Suggest that she make an appointment with her family doctor. Remember that neither of you is alone in this − you can get more professional guidance.

For immediate help, call The Girls and Boys Town National Hotline, a 24-hour crisis, resource, and referral line staffed by highly trained counselors who can respond to any of your mental or physical health problems. The organization also has a chat room staffed by trained counselors.
