When nagging thoughts like “I’m not good enough”, “I’m stupid”, “No one likes me” pop up – it’s time to check yourself before you wreck yourself.
Posture is Everything
Science here – In a series of experiments, Professor Peper of San Francisco State University found that “sitting in a collapsed, helpless position makes it easier for negative thoughts and memories to appear while sitting in an upright, powerful position makes it easier to have empowering thoughts and memories.”
Try striking an empowering pose, either by sitting upright or even sneaking an “IMA BIG BOSS” or “IM DA WO/MAN OF STEEL” power pose in between classes.
Help a Friend
Focusing some of your attention on helping someone else – even if it’s just lending an ear – helps keep things in perspective. Plus it just feels good.
Get Some Sun
Sunlight, our circadian rhythms, melatonin, serotonin, and vitamin D share a complex relationship! Not enough exposure to the sun can legitimately bring you down. Go for a walk, stare at the fat squirrels in the park, or just sit in your backyard and listen to some sweet tunes.
Redecorate Your Space
Maybe your space isn’t boosting your mojo as it should. Pick a personal space where you spend a lot of time – like your bedroom or school locker – and shift things around. Add some flair, put up a new poster, hang pics of friends – a few little changes can put a big smile on your face.
Grab a Healthy Snack
How we feel is directly impacted by things like how much sleep we get, what we eat, how active we are – basically all the little things that add up to being (or not) healthy. Instead of grabbing a bag of chips after school, try an apple instead.
Give Yourself a Pep Talk
This may be the hardest one, but it only takes a few seconds of your day. After waking up and before going to bed, list three things about yourself that you like. Say it out loud, even shout it if you want (just don’t wake the neighbors). Hearing your own voice affirming something good about yourself can really flip the script. You have nothing to lose, right?
